How to Clean Your Hookah Pipe

Hookah pipes need to be washed regularly to keep them hygienic and prevent obstruction. Proper cleaning also ensures a longer lifespan for your hookah, better overall performance, and optimum flavour output.

Things you’ll need to clean your hookah pipe.

·       Lukewarm water (even water from the tap should do)

·       Cleaning agent - lemon juice, dish soap, vinegar, or one of our cleaning solutions

·       Base brush, a sponge, Q tips, and a narrow stem brush, long narrow fireplace tongs that will fit into the base opening

·       Baking soda (optional but recommended)

Follow these steps to clean your hookah in NZ.

1.   Mix your preferred cleaning agent with room temperature water.

2.   Disassemble the hookah into smaller shisha parts carefully and submerge them in the cleaning solution for 5 minutes. Be careful when unscrewing the hookah pipe, so you don’t lose any crucial parts.

3.    Clean the base by filling it halfway with your cleaning solution. Swirl it around and carefully dump the contents. Repeat as necessary and use the base brush to gently scrub out the vase's interior before rinsing with plain water until it is completely clean. A base brush can be too abrasive, so we recommend using a sponge and fireplace tongs to avoid scratching up the glass.

4.   Use a narrow brush to clean the stem. Block one end of the smoking pipes with a thumb and fill them with the cleaning agent. Scrub the residue with your narrow brush and rinse with tap water until clean.

5.   Check if the hose is washable. If it is, fill it with the cleaning solution and rinse it out up to three times with clean water. Most silicon hoses are washable. Hang and leave in the sun to drip dry.

6.   Soak the bowl with the cleaning solution for 5 minutes. Be careful if it’s glazed, as aggressive scrubbing can remove the coating, so use your hands, Q-tips, paper towels, or a sponge to remove any residue or dirt gently. If you find that shisha or charcoal residue is not coming off easily, soak the top half of the bowl in hot-warm water. Be careful not to burn your hand when scrubbing the bowl again.

More things to know

Avoid placing hookah pipes in a dishwasher, and don’t leave water in the vase after smoking as this could result in mold and residue build-up. Clean the hookah stand only with water, but consider a cleaning agent to remove flavour residue.

Avoid extreme changes in temperature when cleaning your hookah pipe, as hot water can cause your glass base or hookah bowl to crack. It is also not recommended to soak grommets in hot water as the rubber could shrink and may be difficult to fit back on your hookah pipe.

Pro tip: It’s always a good idea to wash hookah pipes in NZ after every use and every time you change flavours. This way, you don’t have to worry about unwanted tastes and other unpleasant experiences. Use baking soda and vinegar to clean the main pipe and stem, deeply and effectively.
